My business doesn't define Me.
“If you find honey, eat just enough-- too much of it, and you will vomit.”
- Proverbs 25:16 (New International Version)
Found myself complaining to bae the other day about how I felt like I got nothing done all day. He then proceeded to ask me about my day and I shared all the stuff that happened -- how I only got part of my business work done for the day because I had to deal with a plumbing issue in the house, etc. After hearing all of it he was like, “ummm sounds like you actually got a lot done today babe.”
And he was right.
I had contacted my insurance, scheduled plumbers, dealt with my annoying neighbors whose ceiling my pipes are leaking into 😒, plus, even though I didn’t get everything done I wanted to get done for my business that day, I still checked a few tasks off the list.
So how did I still feel so unaccomplished? Why is it that not getting everything done on my business “to do” list automatically equaled an unproductive day in my mind?
Because I’ve been letting my business performance dictate how I feel about the rest of my life. That's why.
Eek! I need to get it togetha! That’s why this week’s scripture ministers to me so much. Finding your purpose and seeing how God has aligned it with what you’re doing in business can be the most rewarding, sweetest sensation ever (especially when you’ve been searching for it for so long!). But, just like eating too much honey can make you physically sick, overindulging in your business can be bad for your health too - emotionally, spiritually, physically and relationally (yea, bae has officially let me know that I’ve reached the “I talk too much about my business” point. Ouch 😬🙈).
And I’m gonna be honest with you, I have been overindulging. I'm not beating myself up or guilt-tripping about it either, just calling a spade a spade. I know I need to do the work to put my business into its proper place and I thank God He warned me now, before things got out of hand.
So whether you’ve gotten a bit consumed in your business like me, or are still searching for your “honey” I hope you heed this warning today. Remember that there are other areas of your life that are just as important as your business, if not more so. Celebrate yourself for that awesome dinner you cooked (or heated up! lol). Spend some quality time with bae, mama or best fran. Pat yourself on the back for getting your kids to school on time, finally having that tough conversation or scheduling that therapy appointment. Those things count too.
Business is just one of the many beautiful facets of the abundant life God created you to enjoy. Balance and celebrate yo’self accordingly.
